Stewardship

Genesis 1:28 says “God blessed them, saying: “Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and all the living things that move on the earth.”  Then in Deuteronomy 10:14 it says “The heavens, even the highest heavens, belong to the LORD, your God, as well as the earth and everything on it.”

In a world where a lot of people are concerned of amassing more “stuff” for themselves, it is important to take a few steps back and realize that all that we have is a gift from God.  Furthermore, a good steward, or manager, would use these gifts to help others rather than themselves.  So how do you use your gifts?  Do you use them primarily to serve yourself or serve others?

We discussed Bono, the lead singer for U2.  We all know U2’s successes on the stage, and we all know Bono’s work off of the stage.  Bono, in my opinion, demonstrates what a good steward would do with the gifts that God has given him.  He has taken his time and treasure to help a continent that is ravaged with poverty and disease.  Most in Africa do not even know him for being the lead singer of U2.  They just know him as a friendly face that has helped their people.  We also know that some people use their gifts to help themselves but that could lead to self destruction because happiness can never really be achieved if one continues to serve him or herself.  We named superstars that may have succumbed to this.

We do not have to be a superstar to make a difference by serving others utilizing God’s gifts, however, we also do not have to be a superstar to succumb to self destruction by constantly serving oneself.  We all must think how we can serve God by serving others and how we can use our gifts to help others.  Worldly people will tell you to look out after yourself, but our goal is Heaven and we do not want to miss it for the “World”.
